Competence Based Education Training

Recognizing that the first cohort of CBE students will transition to the University in 2029, the CBE Preparedness Committee, spearheaded by Dr. Hoseah Kiplagat (Dean, School of Education), in collaboration with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD)  conducted a comprehensive 3-day training on Competency-Based Education (CBE) from May 12th to 14th, 2025. This training aimed to fortify the transition process to CBE, specifically targeting the UoE CBE Champions.

The training was officially opened by Prof. Nicholas Makau (Ag. Vice-Chancellor), representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Thomas Cheruiyot. In the address, he articulated that this was the 2nd training session for the CBE Champions, underscoring the University’s unwavering commitment to the University transitioning to the CBE curriculum. This transition is pivotal to the successful implementation of the planned activities geared towards the  successful execution of the planned preparedness for the Competency-Based Education Curriculum, which is aligned with the University’s Performance Contract targets for the 2024/2025 period and the directives outlined in the Committee’s Terms of Reference. He further highlighted that currently, ten teacher education programs are being adapted to meet the stipulations of the CBE Curriculum, in accordance with the guidelines established by the Commission for University Education (CUE).

The CBE training was facilitated by Dr. Josephat Miheso, Mr. Patrick Andika and Mr. Arthur Mdoga from KICD. The facilitators covered the following areas; The Basic Education Curriculum Framework; Curriculum change, Rationale, Pillars; Transition to senior school. Implications to University Education; The Senior School Pathways and Tracks Implications to University Education and Competency-based Pedagogy/21st Century Pedagogy/Andragogy.

The training constitutes a pivotal component of the initiatives aimed at equipping all principal stakeholders involved in the transition, including the technical colleagues, with the requisite skills in Competency-Based Education.  This encompasses the delineation of pathways and the alignment of curricula to the CBE framework.
