On 12th June, 2025, the OC was hosted by Ms. Winny Rutto (Koriryo), son a one-hour talk show on Dairy Animal Feeds and Feeding at KASS FM Studios. The main speaker, Ms. Monicah Yator, an Animal Scientist from the Department of Animal Science, University of Eldoret, provided an in-depth analysis of the different types of feeds essential for dairy production. She categorized feeds into grasses, legumes, and concentrates, explaining their nutritional roles in promoting milk yield and overall animal health. Ms. Yator further elaborated on feed formulation strategies, detailing how dietary requirements vary across different stages of a dairy cow’s lifecycle. For calves, she emphasized high-protein feeds to support growth, while weaners require balanced energy and fiber for a smooth transition. Dry cows need maintenance diets to prepare for calving, whereas in-calf cows benefit from nutrient-rich feeds to ensure proper fetal development. For lactating cows, she stressed the importance of high-energy concentrates to sustain optimal milk production.
Dr. Heka Kamau, the Coordinator of the University of Eldoret’s Outreach Centre, shed light on the institution’s efforts to bridge the gap between research and practical farming. He explained how the Outreach Centre links the University to the community for knowledge transfer. He also highlighted the programs offered at the UoE, encouraging farmers to leverage research-based knowledge to improve their dairy operations.
The discussion also featured Mr. Cosmas Mutai, who underscored the importance of collaboration in advancing dairy farming. He expressed gratitude to county governments and private companies for their partnership with the University of Eldoret in extending resources, training, and innovations to farmers. The session concluded with an invitation to the audience to attend the 2025 edition of the UoE’s Annual Agribusiness Trade Fair slated for 11th to 13th September, 2025.
