Enhancing Industry-Academic Strategic Partnerships for the Transformation of Dairy Farming Through Innovation

On 19th May 2026, the University of Eldoret (UoE), in partnership with Brookside Dairy Ltd., officially launched a large-scale fodder production initiative at the UoE Farm, a major milestone in strengthening industry-academia collaboration in Kenya’s dairy sector. Through the UoE–Brookside Memorandum of Understanding Opportunity (MOU) partnership established in 2025, the two institutions are driving practical, research-based solutions aimed at revolutionizing dairy production and farmer livelihoods.
The partnership focuses on:

  • Establishing a commercial fodder production unit
  • Improving dairy breeds through embryo transfer technologies
  • Training and skilling in dairy production and management
  • Advancing dairy research and innovation
  • Creating student attachment, internship, and employment opportunities

The process was led by the Directorate of Industrial Linkages, Partnerships and Collaborations, the Directorate of Seed Multiplication and Research Centre (SMRC), the Industry Linkage Committee and the Brookside team, the initiative has begun with:

  • 50 acres of Rhodes grass hay production
  • 30 acres of lucerne production — a high-protein fodder source

The fodder unit will not only serve the growing market of Brookside-affiliated dairy farmers but will also become a model training and innovation hub for farmers, students, trainers, and stakeholders interested in sustainable fodder production, processing, and dairy feeding systems.

In addition, the University of Eldoret, together with the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRIC), is spearheading the next phase focused on dairy breed improvement to enhance milk productivity and meet the evolving needs of farmers. This partnership demonstrates how universities and industry can work together to bridge the gap between science and practice for sustainable agricultural transformation.
