Higher Education Institutional Needs Assessment

The University held a workshop on Intellectual Property (IP) facilitated by Consultants from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in collaboration with the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI). The Higher Education Institutional Needs Assessment workshop was held on 3rd October, 2022 and was officially opened by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (PRE) Prof. Phillip Raburu. In his remarks, Prof. Raburu thanked the consultants for helping the University in matters IP towards recognition and commercialization.

The lead consultant Ms. Caroline Muchiri and her colleague Ms. Christine Olando explained that the needs assessment was necessary to help the 7 selected institutions understand and commercialize their intellectual properties. They pointed out major challenges that institutions handling IP faced in the process of IP commercialization. These included inadequate funds that limit commercialization, limited research staff that cause excess workload to researchers, and limited institutional research mandate. Further discussions revealed that the University has several IPs including soil testing services, sale of fingerlings, timber treatment services, EIA consultancy services, and innovations from research projects by students and staff. To streamline commercialization, the University was advised to focus on 5 key areas: the identification of IP assets, screening innovations, establishing commercialization avenues, identifying technology transfer and information sharing avenues, and IP capacity building initiatives. The consultants also recommended that the institution should develop business plans for all UOE initiatives because IP planning begins at the project planning phase. On the way forward, the consultants agreed to review the University’s IP Policy, identify any gaps, and make the necessary recommendations that would be communicated to the University for further action.

The event was organized by Head IPMO Prof. Lizzy Mwamburi and in attendance were Deans of Schools, Directors, School Research Chairs, Corporate Affairs and Marketing Manager and representative from the Finance Office.
