University’s Business Start-Ups and Resource Mobilization Workshop


In line with the strategic objective of strengthening resource mobilization and utilization, and the overarching objectives of promoting, operationalizing and profitably managing income generating units and activities to support the improvement of the infrastructure, financial viability and stability of the University, the Directorate of Income Generating Units, hosted a workshop on Business Start-Ups and Resource Mobilization for the Income Generating Units (IGU) Heads of Department at Sirikwa Hotel on June 2nd and 3rd, 2022.

The training was officially opened by the Director of Strategic Planning and Performance Contracting, Dr. David Waswa, representing the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Planning, Research and Extension), Prof. Philip Raburu. In his speech, he pointed out that the training was very timely for the IGU Heads of Departments considering the University required additional revenue streams in order to achieve its goals. He noted that training was not the end product but one of the activities required to achieve the University goals. Dr. Waswa challenged the HoD’s to ensure they have quality products and services, increase and diversify their income streams and have measurable objectives that they intend to achieve.

The Director of the Income Generating Unit’s Directorate, Prof. Balozi Bekuta in his remarks commended the HoD’s for their determination to achieve their goals with the resources they had at their disposal as well as their vision of improving their departments geared to increasing and improving the University’s revenue streams. He assured them of the Directorate’s support and will to ensure that additional workshops are hosted to enable them gain knowledge on various ways to improve income generation, have financial prudence and run profitable business ventures.

The trainers were members of the University faculty who took the HoD’s through the sessions - Business Start-Up’s and Management by Dr. George Ariya, Financial Management and Accounting Procedures by CPA Barnabas Agar and Resource Mobilization and Management by Prof. James ole Kiyiapi, supported by the IGU Directorate Board members – Dr. Zachary Shitote, Mr. Francis Mwaura and Dr. Georgine Kemboi.

The attendees for the workshop were Mr. Richard Nzuva (Hostels), Mr. Geoffrey Nyongesa (Tailoring), Dr. Josiah Chiveu (Farm), Dr. Geoffrey Kiptoo (Chemistry & Biochemistry), Mr. Samuel Kipkemoi (Fish Farm), Mr. Joash Ruto (Bookshop), Dr. Fatuma Daud (GIS), Ms. Anne Njoki (Mushroom Production), Mr. Hillary Ketem (Outreach & International Students’ Centre), Ms. Sarah Kiplagat (UoE Guest House), Dr. Kenneth Odhiambo (Tree Seedlings & Wood Work Production), Ms. Lydia Lelon (Library), Eng. Ahmed Swaleh (School of Engineering), Ms. Maria Wakesho (IGU Directorate) Ms. Marylyne Cherutich (IGU Directorate) and Ms. Cynthia Chebii (Corporate Affairs and Marketing Office).
