The University conducted a training and induction workshop for the first ever Interim Student’s Governing Council in an event that was conducted virtually on 4th November 2020.
The virtual workshop which was officially opened by the Vice-Chancellor Prof Teresa Akenga saw her congratulating the Interim Students’ Council for their appointment into their respective positions. She highlighted that their appointment was necessitated by the need to fill the leadership vacuum left behind by the 7th Student Governing body whose time elapsed early in the year before elections for the new Students’ Council could be held as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. She affirmed that the Interim Students’ Council will have full authority despite them being appointed to these positions, and called upon them to practice sound governance, full of integrity in a time when our society call for soft leadership skills as a result of the new normal environment we are operating in. She reiterated the need of the Interim Students’ Council to be proactive in ensuring that the students’ population adhere to the Covid-19 protocols as outlined by the MoH. She finalized by noting that their appointment to this position is just but a stop-gap measure as the university continues to transition in its new operating environment.
Her sentiments were echoed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic and Students’ Affairs Prof. Ruth Otunga who called upon the Interim Students’ Leaders to be servant leaders and adhere to the required channels of communication. She also called upon them to familiarize themselves with their respective roles and always work to be a bridge between the University Management and the students’ population.
The virtual workshop saw key presentations on the University Administration, Structure and Governance Organs by the DVC (AF) Prof. Wilson Ngétich; Role of Student’s Council in the University by Dr. Lelei Kiboiy; Protocol, Communication and Etiquette for Students Leaders by Dr. Esther Nyabuto; University Policies Related to Academic Programmes and Exams by DVC (ASA) Prof. Ruth Otunga and Financial Procedures and Management Budget, Procedure for Approval and Expenditure of UESO finances, Record Keeping and Accountability by CPA Ereu Totona.
