The UoE 4th Innovation Week and Public Lecture


The Directorate of Research and Innovation organized the UoE 4th Innovation Week and Public Lecture that took place from Monday 28th to Wednesday 30th November 2022. Guided by the theme Building Livelihoods through Innovations, the innovation week provided participants with an opportunity to exhibit innovations that aimed at solving societal challenges and were in line with the Kenya Vision 2030 and the goals and priority areas of the African Union Agenda 2063. The Innovation Week was attended by staff and students from the University of Eldoret, the Rift Valley Technical Training Institute, Ol’lessos Technical Training Institute, Rivatex, Kenya Seed Company Eldoret, NACOSTI, County Government of Nandi, ABSA Bank, UK Knowledge Transfer Network, and EldoHub. The Innovation Week had an overall attendance of 460 individuals. The hybrid sessions (panel session and public lecture) had a total of 699 views on YouTube livestreaming.


Day 1 - 28th November, 2022

The Innovation Week commenced with a hybrid Panel Discussion Session where the topic Fostering Collaborations between Universities and the Private Sector was tackled. Chaired by Ms. Sheilah Birgen from UK Knowledge Transfer Network and Prof. Kisilu Kitainge the Director Industrial Linkages, Partnerships and Collaborations; the panel session consisted of various panellists including Dr. Yulita Mitei Cheruiyot (Deputy Governor County Government of Nandi), Ms. Magdaline Chepkemoi (CEO Eldohub), Mr. Bishar Ali (Branch Manager ABSA Bank Eldoret), Mr. Julius Songok (ABSA Bank Eldoret Branch), and Ms. Esther Cherop (Branch Manager Kenya Seed Company Eldoret). The discussions during the panel session explored the various avenues through which the government, private, and academic institutions can collaborate effectively to promote the commercialization of innovations, fund innovators, and promote sustainability of innovations in today’s competitive markets. A total of 136 participants physically and 454 virtual participants attended the Panel Discussion Session.


Day 2 - 29th November, 2022

The Innovation week was the officially opened by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Teresa Akenga who was accompanied by Prof. Wilson Ngetich (DVC A&F), Prof. Donald Otieno on behalf of DVC PRE, Prof. Lizzy Mwamburi (Director, Research and Innovation), Prof. Kisilu Kitainge (Director, Industrial Linkages, Partnerships and Collaborations), Dr. Getrude Were (Director, Quality Assurance), Dr. Judith Makwali (Director, Gender, Equity and Diversity), Prof. Julius Ochuodho, Prof. Beatrice Were, Mr. Dennis Olike (Senior Assistant Registrar, HR) and Dr. Wambui Ng;ang’a (Corporate Affairs and Marketing Manager). The VC toured the innovations exhibited by participants which included innovations from UoE, Rift Valley Technical Training Institute, Ol’lessos Technical Training Institute, and Rivatex company. In her speech, the Vice Chancellor thanked all participants and applauded the exemplary innovations exhibited by innovators. She urged the participants to commercialize their innovations as this will contribute to the realization of the Innovation Week’s theme. A total of 158 people toured the exhibitions on the 2nd day.


Day 3 - 30th November, 2022

A public lecture session was held on the third day with the guest speaker, Mr. Godfrey Kalerwa from NACOSTI, discussing the topic Research and Intellectual Property Management in Universities and Research Institutions. The guest speaker discussed the different ways (such as patenting and trademarks) through which intellectual properties from innovations can be protected. He also expounded on the various laws, policies, and bodies/organizations that govern or handle intellectual properties. Being a hybrid session, the Public Lecture session was attended by 166 participants physically and 245 virtual participants. The Innovation Week ended with a prize-giving ceremony where the best four innovations were given awards.
