Venture 4 Change Boot Camp and Idea Competition held on 18th & 19th October 2022


University of Eldoret, Outreach Centre successfully hosts Venture for Change Boot Camp and Idea Competition

The Venture4Change under the Making More Health (MMH) initiative is a program for students of different universities in Kenya to conceive, develop and implement innovative ideas to foster hygiene, food safety and health in slums and rural areas. The Venture for Change 2022 Program (V4C 2022) culminated into the Boot Camp and Idea competition held at the University of Eldoret (UoE) between the 18th and 19th of October 2022. This was the 2nd Edition of the Western Kenya Venture4Change Training and Idea competition, with the first being held in 2021. UoE also participated in the 1st Edition. The 2022 version of the programme addressed the problem of waste management under the theme ‘Innovative Waste Management for Sustainable Development’. The program ran for five months since May, 2022 when a call was put forth for interested students to apply. Successful students from participating universities were taken through (both on-line and face to face) six modules (Ideation, Market Research, Business Development, Product Development & Prototyping, Launching & Scaling, and Presentation Skills) and three field visits made to the target community-Kimilili Municipality.

Three participating institutions viz; Moi University, Kibabii University and University of Eldoret presented a total of eight student teams; three each from UoE and Kibabii and two from Moi University. The three teams from UoE were, The Great Developers, The Revivers, and The Change while Team Achievers, Team Safy and Team Smart hailed from Kibabii and Team Spork and Team Asili came from Moi University.

On 18th October 2022, all the teams participated in a Boot Camp where they could present their ideas to lecturers and colleagues from the other universities and get feedback on how to improve them before final presentation to the Jury the following day. Dr. Javan Were from UoE moderated the session. The Idea Competition was then held on the 19th of October 2022. Student teams had to present their ideas to a Jury of seven members; Ms. Harriet Kamashanyu – Social Entrepreneur - Rhythm of Life, Uganda, Ms. Jane Waithera – Social Entrepreneur - Positive Exposure, Kenya, Mr. Tobi Adegbite –Social Entrepreneur -  Entojutu, Nigeria, Prof. Henry Bwisa – Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology, Dr. James Mbugua Kariuki – University of Kabianga, Mr. John Ndombi - Kimilili Municipality all from Kenya and Mr. Dennis Mbugua – Boehringer Ingelheim, Kenya. In a fiercely contested competition, Moi University took the first two positions with UoE-Team Revivers scooping the second runners up. Prices for the winners are in form of financial support to a tune of 3000 euro for the winner and 1000 euro each for the first and second runners up to develop their ideas further for possible startups.

The event was officially opened by Prof. G. Simiyu, Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor, Planning Research and Extension and closed by Prof. Vincent Sudoi, Director, Research and Innovation. Also in attendance were Ms. Hilke Rooskamp (Boehringer Ingelheim – Germany) and Mr. Cleophas Chesoli (Making More Health, Kenya). UoE Venture4Change team includes Dr. Abigael Otinga as the team leader, Ms. Cynthia Chebii, Prof. Lizzy Mwamburi, Dr. Javan Were, Dr. Daniel Chebet, Dr. Ruth Njoroge, Dr. Judith Khazenzi, Prof. Balozi Bekuta, Dr. Mary Rono, Mr. Hillary Kettem and Mr. Kipkogei Chemitei). We congratulate all the three teams from UoE for the sterling performance exhibited at the Idea Competition
