On Sunday, February 11th 2024, a team from the School of Science, Dr. Becky Aloo, Dr. Emily Chemoiwa and Dr. Argwings Otieno visited Butere Girls’ High School for a STEM mentorship session aimed at empowering the Science Club students and marking the International Day for Girls and Women in Science. The team was joined by Ms. Marystella Injete, a former student of the University of Eldoret, who is the current Young Ambassador for the American Society for Microbiology and a mentor for Young Scientists Kenya (YSK).
The mentorship session featured a range of fun-packed activities to inspire and educate the students in STEM fields. There was a "Dance with the Microbes" and a Kahoot it! online learning quiz which tested their knowledge in various STEM subjects. The team also took the opportunity to inform the students about the degree programs offered at the School of Science at the University of Eldoret and the various career options available in STEM fields. The session included presentations on YSK and its mission to promote STEM education and innovation among youth in Kenya. The students were introduced to YSK programs and opportunities for science club students to participate in research projects, competitions and mentorship programs.
As they concluded the mentorship session, the students were treated to a science-themed cake while the winning teams of the Kahoot quizzes were awarded, adding to the excitement and engagement of the day.
Overall, the mentorship session at Butere Girls High School provided the students with valuable insights, inspiration, and encouragement to pursue careers in STEM and enlightened them about the programs at the University of Eldoret.
