Launch of University of Eldoret’s 3rd Strategic Plan (2024 - 2029)

The 3rd University of Eldoret Strategic Plan 2024-2029 was officially launched by the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Hon. Julius Migos Ogamba, EGH, in a landmark event that underscored the University’s commitment to excellence in fulfilling its core mandate of teaching, research, innovation and community service.

During his address, Hon. Ogamba emphasized the significance of the strategic plan, which depicts the commitment to fostering an institution that will thrive in innovative environment and contribute to the national development. He acknowledged that the strategic plan aligned to the Ministry of Education’s transformation, reforming and repositioning agenda.

“The Strategic Plan is the guiding document that provides a clear roadmap for institutional development. The UoE Strategic Plan is an ambitious framework that seeks to reposition the institution as a centre of academic distinction and research innovation,” said Hon Ogamba.  He underscored the importance of the plan as it focused on expanding the academic programmes, strengthening research, enhancing industry collaboration and embracing digital transformation to ensure that students receive market driven education and contribute to Kenya's development agenda by fostering entrepreneurship, technology transfer and community engagement.

Hon. Ogamba recognised the critical role that universities play in national development noting that the ministry’s goal focuses on strengthening institutions through policy reforms, funding support, infrastructure development and capacity building programs to ensure that they remain globally competitive. He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to enhance research funding to support ground breaking discoveries and innovations that will contribute to Kenya’s socioeconomic growth. “We are determined to promote partnerships between universities and industries to ensure graduates are job ready and equipped with practical skills. Strengthening governance and accountability to uphold the integrity of our education systems is one of the key anchors of the education system,” he said. He urged the UoE community to implement the strategic plan with precision impact as a well articulated strategy is only as strong as its execution. He encouraged the members of staff to embrace the vision encapsulated in the strategic plan, embrace sustainability initiatives to address environmental challenges and contribute to Kenya’s green economy agenda and committed that the ministry would work with the university to transform, reform and reposition the education sector for the betterment of the nation.

The Deputy Governor of the County Government of Uasin Gishu, Hon. Evans Kapkea, representing the Governor, Hon. Dr. Jonathan Bii, said the county takes great pride in the University as an academic powerhouse within the county. He noted that the strategic plan positions the University as a centre of research, innovation and student-centred learning thus there is need to strengthen stakeholder engagement and foster partnerships with industry. He urged the University faculty to continue leading in research, innovation and real world situations while building on trust, upholding the University mission and embrace new opportunities for growth.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Council, Dr. Ismail Buro Hassan reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to support academic and institutional excellence. “The first and the second strategic plans,” he said, “aimed at consolidating the core functions of the University. With the third Strategic Plan we intend to provide a framework for sustaining and maximizing utilization of resources to support the core functions thus producing graduates who are well-rounded while we aim for global visibility as a research centre through internationalization, informationalization and innovation.”

Prof. Thomas Cheruiyot, the Vice-Chancellor, emphasized the significance of the 3rd Strategic Plan stating that the objectives were transformative. To achieve these objectives the university is in the process of undertaking a comprehensive review of the University curriculum to ensure alignment with the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) and national development priorities and goals. “We have began policy reforms, faculty capacity building, resource mobilization and additional measures to create programs that meet the needs of an evolving society,” he said. Stating that the University’s goal is to ensure that it is on the forefront of generating knowledge that addresses societal challenges, leveraging on information and technology which are drivers to enhancing efficiency and optimizing faculty productivity and implement curriculum delivery reforms.

The key objectives in the strategic plan include promoting excellence in the quality of teaching and learning, enhancing student experience and personal development, enhancing capacity for research and innovation, strengthening stakeholder relationship and community service, providing technological and physical infrastructure for conducive learning and working environment, promoting employee productivity and sound institutional governance and promoting asset management and financial sustainability.

The introduction of the Strategic Plan 2024-2029 signifies a crucial milestone in the government's continuous endeavor to cultivate initiatives within Universities that bolster academic excellence, advance research endeavors, integrate cutting-edge technology in educational practices, and foster global competitiveness.
