Acknowledging that the first cohort of CBC students will be transitioning to the University in 2029, the CBC Preparedness Committee, under the leadership of Dr. Hoseah Kiplagat (Dean, School of Education), in conjunction with the Commission of Education (CUE) and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) hosted a 2-day training on Competency-Based Education (CBE) on December 16th and 17th, 2024. The training was officially opened by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Thomas Cheruiyot, who was represented by Prof. Wilson K. Ng’etich, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration & Finance). It was facilitated by Prof. Jackson Too from CUE and Ms. Keziah Saoli from TSC for members of the University Senate and members of staff who possess foundation knowledge on CBE. This training will ensure that the academic leadership of the University leads from the front as the University transitions to Competency-Based Education (CBE) while ensuring the successful execution of planned CBC preparedness activities which are informed by the University’s Performance Contract targets and the Committee’s Terms of Reference.
The facilitators covered the following areas; Preparedness of Universities to CBC/CBE-Survey Report; Competency-Based Education; Transitioning to CBE-Perspectives; and Community Service Learning (CSL), Pertinent and Contemporary Issues (PCIs), Value-Based Education (VBE) and Learning Support Education (LSE). The training is part of the activities planned by the University through the CBE Preparedness Committee that will ensure that all key players involved in the transition, including the technical staff, are retooled on Competency-Based Education which will encompass the definition of pathways and alignment of curricula to CBE. The training was officially closed by the Prof. Godfrey W. Netondo Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & Students’ Affairs).
