The first Honorary Degree of the University of Eldoret was conferred to Faith Kipyegon, EGH (now Dr. Faith Kipyegon). She was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Education, Honoris Causa (Hon.D.Ed.).
In January 2024 a call was issued for members of the public to nominate individuals for the award of the honorary degree. The call closed on March 31, 2024. The Honorary Degree Committee led by Prof. Vincent Sudoi assessed the nominations and the first recipient was declared to be Faith Kipyegon, EGH.
Her journey in the field of athletics has been unparallel to any athlete gaining the reputation of breaking her own records in the 1500 meters race year by year. Starting her career running barefoot to being the champion of the track was due to sheer determination, resilience and discipline.
In her acceptance speech, Dr. Kipyegon said, “I am extremely honored and full of thanksgiving on being the first recipient of an Honorary degree of the University of Eldoret. It is extremely humbling to be the first female recipient of this Honorary award and be honored by esteemed academicians. I will be forever grateful for the recognition that I have been bestowed with.” She continued, “To be who I am today has demanded dedication, commitment and determination. I have run on this sports track as part of my training schedule. I have a regiment of training programmes which I have to faithfully adhere to even now that the season is over till next year, every morning I am at work. It is not easy as a world record holder, everything around me is timed. Discipline is paramount as an athlete. This includes keeping off anything thing that would ruin my reputation and career.”
She mentioned that she owed her success to her family and appreciated her husband Mr. Timothy Kitum for his unwavering support in her career. She dedicated the day to her daughter Alyn who was her source of inspiration.
She concluded her speech by congratulating her fellow graduands for their momentous achievements. “As fellow youth, you and I are the future leaders of our great country. May you prosper in your future careers. Not to forget, we should always remember to support our now alma mater, the University of Eldoret: the Flame of Knowledge and Innovation.”
