Universities play a key role in the development of human resources for all production sectors of the economy through training and conducting research and development for the generation, curation, and dissemination of new knowledge. University research programmes are critical in the development of theoretical foundations in basic sciences that underpin applied research. A great proportion of research funding initiatives focus more on applied research, seen to generate quick gains as opposed to basic research, whose benefits are not always apparent.

This is a collaborative research project between the University of Eldoret, Kenya and the University of Potsdam, Germany.

Objective: The long-term aim is to develop an all-male tilapia strain for commercial aquaculture in Kenya. Economic production of farmed tilapias globally relies on use of all-male tilapia seed, since males grow faster than females, and mixed sex cultures lead to prolific breeding in culture facilities, yielding many small sized fish of low market value. 

The University hosts several externally funded research projects in collaboration with a variety of national and international partners to meet the needs and aspirations of the dynamic societal challenges. The research projects address diverse areas of sustainable exploitation and management of natural resources, solving environmental challenges, and food and nutritional security all of which synchronize with the national goals.

In the field of research, social science, and natural science serve distinct purposes in understanding phenomena within our immediate environments. While natural science explores the physical universe through empirical observation and experimentation, social science tries to analyze the social systems surrounding human behavior, societies, and institutions. However, within their application, they both play crucial roles in enhancing a deeper understanding of phenomena of different aspects of reality.

The Flame Students Magazine at the University of Eldoret is a vibrant publication that encapsulates the dynamic spirit of the student body. Committed to capturing the diverse experiences and talents within the university community, the magazine serves as a creative platform for students to express their ideas, showcase their achievements, and delve into campus culture. Through engaging content that spans events, arts, culture, and student perspectives, the Flame Students Magazine fosters a sense of community and provides a unique lens into the rich tapestry of university life at Eldoret.

Over the years, the University has accumulated several innovations from students and staff. However, only a few of these innovations have been protected because the students and staff are not well-trained in patent drafting. 

Hence, to address this, the University through the Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO) which is housed under the Directorate of Research and Innovation held a patent drafting workshop for innovators and members of the Intellectual Property Management Committee at EKA Hotel, Eldoret on 14 -15 November 2023.

The Production of new knowledge through the practices of research and publications has been central at the heart of the university’s mission. Traditionally, universities relied heavily on formal publication systems as a means of disseminating research findings from their scholars. However, with the coming of newer digital technologies, a modern approach to research dissemination through hybrid and virtual conferences has been embraced which has enhanced a broader range of dissemination possibilities of research and publications.
