The 8th Devolution Conference was held on 15 – 19 August 2023 at Eldoret Sports Club, Uasin Gishu County. The convention, themed 10 Years of Devolution: The Present and the Future set the stage to relook the devolution journey. The conference was officially opened by H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, C.G.H President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces. Other dignitaries included H.E Rigathi Gachagua, EGH who officially closed the conference, Rt. Hon. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, EGH.
The University of Eldoret opened a new chapter in its calendar of events when the University Council, Management, and Senate welcomed the new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Thomas Kimeli Cheruiyot, on Friday 1st September, 2023.
Prof. Cheruiyot who takes over the reign from Prof. Wilson K. Ng’etich who has been acting as the Vice-Chancellor from 9th June 2023 to date, will be the Second Vice-Chancellor in the History of the University.
Potato is the second most important staple food after maize in Kenya. However, the yield levels are too low at 9t/ha, compared to a potential yield of 20-40t /ha. The low yields are attributed to biotic and abiotic stresses which include inadequate quality seed and planting materials, low soil fertility, low-yielding varieties, diseases and insect pests, poor adaptability and yield stability to different environments and climatic changes among others.
The University through the Directorate of Research and Innovation in liaison with the School of Arts and Human Development, Department of Humanities hosted a Public lecture themed ‘The Question of Intelligent Design: We Follow the Evidence Where it Leads on 11th of September, 2023 at the Kerio Hall. The lecture which was attended by University Management Board members led by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Thomas K. Cheruiyot, Chair/CEO BioCosmos Africa Mr. Dag Kr. Norli, Chair BioCosmos Kenya Dr. Richard Ochieng, Reuben Kigame HSC, and over 500 participants were presented by Dr.
The University hosted its’ 16th Agribusiness Trade Fair on Thursday 14th, Friday 15th, and Saturday 16th, September 2023 at the University Pavilion Grounds starting at 8.00 a.m. daily. The theme for this year’s Agribusiness Trade Fair was: “Promoting Climate Smart Agri-preneurship and Value Addition to Spur Industrialization for Sustainable Development”
International Microorganisms Day is a worldwide event to promote the diversity and variety of microorganisms. It is a way to encourage everyone to recognize and celebrate the many ways microscopic organisms are important in human health, culture, economic activity, employment, and, throughout our daily lives. This year, the Department of Biological Sciences, with the generous support of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) marked the day on 18th September 2023 at the University Grounds to educate the public about the importance of microbes and microbiology in human welfare.
The University received first-year students 2023/2024 cohort who reported to the University on 11th – 12th September 2023 and were duly registered at the various Schools. Orientation sessions took place between 13th September 2023 to 16th September 2023. The climax of the orientation process culminated with the Vice-Chancellor’s address on 22nd September 2023.
It was a joyous moment for Joy Edah, when her name was read out by the Chief Guest, Deputy Governor Uasin-Gishu County H.E. Hon. Eng. John Barorot, as the winner of this year’s raffle prize. The winner could not believe the good news after her raffle ticket was picked out during the final day of the Agribusiness Trade Fair 2023. The top prize of a heifer worth One Hundred Thousand shillings (Ksh.100,000.00) was a donation from the University as the raffle prize of this year’s Trade Fair.
