As a curtain raiser to the 7th Annual Innovation Week, the University held a two-and-a-half-day Capacity Building Workshop for Students and Researchers on Innovation for Sustainability from 2nd to 4th February 2026. The workshop was designed to strengthen the capacity of participants to design, develop, and commercialize innovative solutions aligned with sustainability goals, while nurturing a culture of creativity, collaboration, and leadership within the University’s innovation ecosystem. This is in line with the University’s vision of being a premier University nurturing global leaders and Innovators for sustainability. The workshop was designed to set the tone for the 7th Annual Innovation Week reinforcing the University’s commitment to nurturing innovation for sustainability and building the next generation of solution-driven leaders.

Guided by the approaches of the Africa Science Leadership Program (ASLP) and the Kenya Science Leadership Program (Ke-SLP), the workshop adopted an interactive and experiential learning model facilitated by experts. The training integrated practical tools such as Creative Problem Solving and collaborative ideation frameworks, enabling participants to explore real-world sustainability challenges and develop structured, innovative responses. Rather than relying solely on lectures, the facilitators emphasized hands-on engagement, peer learning, reflective discussions, and leadership development exercises.

Throughout the sessions, students and researchers worked in teams to conceptualize ideas, refine problem statements, and examine pathways to translating innovations into practical and impactful solutions. The experiential approach enhanced their confidence, strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration, and deepened their understanding of how innovation can drive sustainable development. Participants also gained valuable insights into the commercialization process and the importance of aligning innovation with societal and environmental needs.

The workshop was highly engaging and inspiring, with participants expressing appreciation for the interactive format and practical orientation of the sessions. Many reported increased clarities in structuring their ideas and renewed motivation to pursue sustainable and impactful innovations. It was evident that at the end of the training, participants demonstrated improved ideation skills, stronger teamwork, and greater readiness to transform ideas into real-world solutions.
